The 37th Class of Leadership San Antonio (LSA) recently took a behind-the-scenes look at the military training operations and ground-breaking medical advancements that put San Antonio on the map. The day began at Medtronic, Inc. where Thomas Oglesby, Senior Manager of Patient Retention and Pharmacy Programs, discussed Medtronic’s mission to transform the way the world treats chronic disease.

Afterward, the class visited Camp Bullis, where they were welcomed by Colonel John Garr, Commander of the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute. Col. Garr joined them for a tour of the Combat Casualty Care Course that military medical officers complete as part of their training in San Antonio. The class also toured a full-scale, working replica field hospital that simulates the environment that medical officers face in combat zones.

From Camp Bullis, the class was next greeted at the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio by Interim Director Dr. Kenneth Kalkwarf. The group was briefed on the development and implementation of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) by J. Tullos Wells, former Chamber Chairman and Senior Partner at Bracewell & Giuliani. Jim Brazell, CEO of VentureRAMP, Inc., followed with a presentation on the history of medical infrastructure in San Antonio.

After lunch, the class held roundtable discussions with industry experts and doctors on healthcare issues facing San Antonio. Dr. Thomas Schlenker, Director of Health for the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, discussed the city’s role in healthcare; Dr. Ernesto Gomez, President & CEO of CentroMed, addressed the community’s access to healthcare; Dr. Thomas Mayes, Professor & Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, spoke of the need for a children’s hospital in San Antonio; Dr. Amita Patnaik, Associate Director of Clinical Research for South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START), explained how they are accelerating anti-cancer drug development and Jon Jimenez, CEO of One Source Medical Group, discussed San Antonio’s ongoing fight with diabetes.

The day culminated at the Eilan luxury development with an evening cocktail reception and dance lessons from iDanceCity.
