CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Director First in Community to Complete Pediatric Bioethics Program

Sheryl Sullivan, Director of Risk Management for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, has become the first health care professional in San Antonio to earn specialized certification in Pediatric Bioethics from the Children’s Mercy Center for Pediatric Bioethics.

The Children’s Mercy Center for Pediatric Bioethics program is the only one of its kind in the United States that focuses exclusively on the special ethical concerns of children and their families; it is taught by faculty from the Children’s Mercy Hospital and the University of Missouri – Kansas City. The nine month program is designed to help clinicians understand common pediatric bioethical issues.

“Ethical considerations of pediatric patients are vastly different from those of adult patients. The Children’s Mercy Center Program gave me the confidence and knowledge to recognize and manage difficult ethical situations,” said Sheryl Sullivan. “Having the ability to address the ethical issues that arise in pediatrics helps improve the lives of the children in our care as well as that of their families.”

Sullivan will use her training as part of regular campus ethics consults at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio as well as sharing her learnings with community partners.

“We are so proud of Sheryl’s accomplishment,” said Dr. Dennis Gonzales, Vice President, Mission Integration, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. “As a mission-driven organization, nothing is more important to us than preparing for the vast array of ethical issues which are part of health care practice today.”
