Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Hospitalist Elected to National Board

Reynolds’ Goal to take Hospital to National Stage

Dr. Jason Reynolds, a hospitalist at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, was recently elected to the position of president-elect by the Society for Pediatric Sedation (SPS), a national organization representing a broad range of professionals in the area of pediatric sedation.

Reynolds is also an assistant professor of pediatrics with Baylor College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and has served on the SPS board since 2010. He will serve as president elect for the organization for two years, after which he will serve two years as president.

The Society for Pediatric Sedation is a national, multi-disciplinary organization uniting medical, dental, nursing, and allied health professionals around the practice of providing safe, high quality care to pediatric patients. The 600-member organization is patient-centered and focused on developing the evolving discipline of pediatric sedation.

“The organization is, of course, focused on the topic of sedation,” says Reynolds. “But what we actually do is eliminate fear, pain, and anxiety in children.”

There are a myriad of techniques which sedation specialists use to facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in children. They range from distraction techniques using the latest iPad app to using proven sedation drugs.

“Regardless of the reason that a child is coming to the Hospital, I want them to leave having had a positive experience,” Reynolds says. “During my term as president, I hope to continue to advance the field of pediatric sedation with a goal of minimizing or eliminating fear, pain, and anxiety in children whenever possible.”

Reynolds’ election is a source of pride for the team leading the transformation of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

“Reynolds’ participation and leadership in the SPS will add San Antonio to the national stage as a center of excellence for pediatric sedation and helps move us closer to our goal of being a world class children's hospital,” says Dr. Ricardo A Quinonez, FAAP, FHM and chief of the division of pediatric hospital medicine at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

“I consider it an honor to be considered for this position,” says Reynolds. “I am prepared to promote the mission of the society, which is to advance pediatric sedation by promoting safe, high quality care, innovative research, and quality professional education.”
