Timothy Griffin, MD will lead cancer center, hospital joins elite Children’s Oncology Group
The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is continuing the mission of bringing world-renowned resources in pediatric health care to South Central Texas and beyond by hiring Timothy Griffin, MD, to lead the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at the Hospital.
“The Cancer and Blood Disorders Center will be the technological center of excellence, “said Griffin, section chief of pediatric hematology/oncology and professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). “A world-class city deserves a world class children’s hospital able to provide the highest level of pediatric hematology/oncology care.”
Since taking on this role, Griffin secured the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio membership to the elite Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a first for the hospital. Children’s Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials group, is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. COG unites more than 8,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in the fight against childhood cancer.
“The Children’s Oncology Group membership allows us the opportunity to partner with cancer experts worldwide, opening doors for participation in clinical trials that will provide new and better therapies for our children diagnosed with cancer,” said Griffin.
Prior to joining the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, Griffin served as pediatrician-in-chief at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital of Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Under his leadership, the hospital earned several US News & World Report rankings for pediatric health care—a first for the hospital. He has also served as medical director for the pediatric hematology/oncology departments at Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Bend, Indiana and Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
“When we said we would bring the best and the brightest medical minds to San Antonio to serve our children, we meant it,” said Dr. Mark Gilger, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio pediatrician-in-chief. “Dr. Griffin’s role in leading pediatric cancer care in San Antonio will create research opportunities that give our children access to the best therapies available—all with a personal, one-on-one touch that Dr. Griffin and his team are known for.”
In addition to Dr. Griffin, the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center has added five BCM faculty physicians, with plans to add additional physicians by September.
“We are building a robust team that will put the children of San Antonio first in cancer care,” said Griffin.
Griffin earned his medical degree at The University of Michigan and completed his pediatric residency at Northwestern University, Children’s Memorial Hospital, where he was chief resident. He completed his hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
