CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Resident Receives Prestigious Award

Zachary Taylor, MD, a family physician in the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, has been selected to receive the 2014 American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education during the AAFP Assembly in October 2014.  This award recognizes outstanding family medicine residents for their leadership, civic involvement, exemplary patient care, and aptitude for and interest in family medicine.  Of the 3,500 eligible Family Medicine residents each year, only 12 qualify for this esteemed designation.

Dr. Taylor is in his third and final year of residency with the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, where he currently serves as Chief Resident.  After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2008, Dr. Taylor’s love for service and desire to positively impact others led him to a career in Family Medicine.  After completing medical school at the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio in 2012, Dr. Taylor was selected for the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, where he will graduate in June 2015.

In addition to this prestigious honor, Dr. Taylor has also received the Perry Post Award for Excellence in San Antonio Family Medicine through the Texas Academy of Family Physicians Alamo Chapter, San Antonio; the Primomo Excellence in Academic Medicine Award through the UT Department of Family and Community Medicine; and The Dr. and Mrs. Alexander David Major Exemplary Family Physician Award through the UT Department of Family and Community Medicine.

“I am proud to be receiving my residency training through the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, where our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” said Dr. Taylor.  “I love working alongside the other physicians and Associates who sincerely embody this mission, and I am pleased and humbled to be able to positively represent CHRISTUS Santa Rosa with this national recognition.”

The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, located on the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills campus in the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Health Center, was founded with one simple principle: "Excellence In All We Do."  With energetic faculty committed to creative, innovative medical education and the support of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, the Program is able to attract exceptional family medicine residents like Dr. Taylor.

“This award is a tremendous honor for Dr. Taylor and the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program,” said James Martin, MD, Chief Medical Officer, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System.  “We are proud of Dr. Taylor’s accomplishments.  This award provides validation that we are moving in the right direction as we strive to promote and teach the exceptional tenets of the patient centered medical home and family medicine to our residents.”

To maintain membership in the AAFP, family medicine physicians are required to complete a minimum of 150 hours of accredited continuing medical education every three years.  The AAFP was the first national medical specialty organization to set continuing education requirements for its members. This requirement helps ensure family physician members stay current on the most up-to-date medical technologies, research, and techniques.

About the American Academy of Family Physicians:

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 115,900 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.

Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is nearly 214 million office visits each year — nearly 74 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
