BCFS Health and Human Services’ San Antonio Transition Center will host its 13th annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Tuesday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Station. The special event will include a full course Thanksgiving meal, guest speakers, door prizes, and even a live art piece constructed by youth currently in foster care whose theme is: “What Are You Thankful For?”
This year, BCFS’ San Antonio Transition Center has helped thousands of local youth who were struggling reached their goals. Graduations, college acceptance letters, new jobs and more are all blessings for which to be thankful.
For many youth who spent time in or aged out of foster care, the holidays are an uncertain time. BCFS’ annual Thanksgiving luncheon has become a “family” tradition, bringing even older young adults who were long ago helped by the center back each year – now into their thirties and with their own children.
Along with those served by the center, community partners like UTSA, the UT Health Science Center, Alamo Colleges, the Department of Family and Protective Services, Bexar County Juvenile Probation, National Council of Jewish Women, CASA, and the City of San Antonio - Metro Health/Project Worth will also be in attendance.
The luncheon’s esteemed speakers are Lorraine LeMon, Founder and Executive Director of Art2Heart, an arts-based leadership program for children, and Dr. Alfred Perez, UTSA Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work. Dr. Perez will share his thoughts on success through social services with his “From Foster Care to the Ivory Tower” presentation, while Ms. LeMon will discuss the unique pairing of the arts with social services outreach and mentorship.

BCFS’ transition center is a safe-haven for local youth who are at-risk of homelessness, poverty or other challenges that could inhibit a successful transition into adulthood and independence. It serves youth in foster care, those in the juvenile justice system, and other young adults who are struggling by providing case management, counseling, mentorship, and assistance with education, employment and housing — all under one roof.
