For years The Magik Theatre has transformed San Antonio venues into the equivalent of London’s Globe Theatre, bringing the works of William Shakespeare to South Texas. Most recently, the event has taken place at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Due to renovations at the garden, in 2015 it will move from spring to Labor Day, at the same time traveling downtown to La Villita and the Arneson River Theatre. The event will run September 3 through September 6.

This year’s selected play is The Winter’s Tale, under the direction of Beth Lopes, who also directed The Magik Theatre’s 2014 Shakespeare in the Park production of Hamlet. Ms. Lopes is a free-lance theatre director based in Los Angeles. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing degree from the Clair Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California/Irvine.

In addition to performances of the play, there will be movie screenings of other Shakespeare works, and The Magik Theatre plans to create an Elizabethan fair throughout La Villita. As well as the Shakespearean performance, playgoers can enjoy Elizabethan-style food and drink, and entertainers such as strolling musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters, and jesters.
