Beat the Heat and Conserve Energy

Central Texas has set a new peak demand for electricity and our electric infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the demand. In order to avoid unnecessary and costly electricity outages, the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT) are asking customers conserve electricity especially during the peak demand hours of 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

We encourage all Chamber members to consider implementing some of these simple steps in their homes and businesses:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances and electronic equipment.
  • Close blinds and drapes in windows that get direct sun, set home air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, and use fans in occupied rooms.
  • When away from home, set air conditioning thermostats to 85 degrees and turn all fans off before you leave.
  • Use your dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers or other home appliances after 7:00 p.m.
  • Avoid opening refrigerators or freezers more than necessary.
  • Use microwaves for cooking instead of an electric range or oven.
  • Set your pool pump to run in the early morning or late evening.
  • Turn off computers when not in use.
  • Large consumers of electricity should consider reducing non-essential production processes.
