Chamber Honors Military at Spirit of America Dinner

On November 9, The Chamber held its annual Spirit of America Dinner as part of its “Celebrate America’s Military” (CAM) series of events. The dinner, presented by Silver Eagle Distributors and Wal-Mart, featured keynote speaker General Philip M. Breedlove, Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. Chamber President and CEO Richard Perez opened the dinner by acknowledging the active duty personnel, veterans and wounded warriors attending.

“Every aspect of our community is intertwined with the military,” said Perez. “The men and women serving in the armed forces make this a better city and us, better people.”

CAM Chairman Don Taylor, President of TEAM Integrated Engineering, Inc., commended the city of San Antonio as a cornerstone for military support. He acknowledged CAM’s uniqueness and hopes to intertwine the city’s tourism with future CAM events. Taylor also took the opportunity to introduce and recognize two “Hidden Heroes” at the dinner, SSgt. William Martinez of the U.S. Army and TSgt Mathew Kurian of the U.S. Air Force. Both men were honored for their courage and commitment to our nation, each going above and beyond what their uniform requires.

Gen. Breedlove, who currently presides over the Air Staff, applauded the Air Force’s ability to gain and maintain air superiority throughout constant combat and continuously establish domain control in aerospace and cyberspace. He stressed the importance of ensuring the American people that our military is positioned to take on future battles throughout the operational and physical demands the country may face.

“We must continue to promise America that our nation’s military will answer the call,” said Gen. Breedlove. “Although these are challenging times for our country, they are exciting times. The nation relies on the leadership of our four services.”
